The NGO Golden Grouse Clay Shoot promises to be one of the largest gatherings of gamekeepers dressed in estate tweeds this year. In excess of 200 people are expected at the event which is open to NGO members only, and will be held on Wednesday, June 7th in the disused Eastgate quarry, County Durham, where the ITV fantasy drama Beowulf was filmed.

The shoot, as is tradition, will be hosted by last year’s winner, James Watson, keeper on the Burnhope and Ousby Moor. For a £45 entry fee, members compete over a 100 bird Sporting layout, with lunch and cartridges provided. The winner will be presented with the Golden Grouse trophy and have the chance to host the 2018 event.

Speaking about the event, NGO Development Officer (North) Sarah Read said: ‘This fabulous event is a great social for NGO members and a unique day out, so we urge you to come along. I’d also like to thank all our sponsors for supporting this event, including L & A Dent Game Dealers from Carlton in Coverdale, who specialise in selling Yorkshire grouse to the wholesale and catering industry, and are major sponsors of the day, as well as nationwide ATV specialist Polaris, Owens Grouse Grit, Gardiners Farm & Country Store, Carrick Contractors and Darlington Vet Clinic.’

The shoot will comprise 10 stands, all simulating live quarry set in a stunning landscape. A pool shoot, flush and .410 challenge will also be on offer, with classes for keepers, supporters, side-by-sides, ladies, juniors and veterans. Entry is from 9.30am with last entry at 1.00pm. For further information or to book online go to the events page of the NGO website or call the office on (01833) 660869.

The full address of the venue is Heights Quarry, Eastgate, Stanhope, County Durham, DL13 1PF.
